PME is one of my favourite projects, which is unfortunately on hold due to real-life getting in the way of development. The idea behind this little piece of Homebrew for Sonys PSP is to generate Binaural Beats, similar to the application ‘Brain Wave Generator’.
This application, while working in several forms, met a snag when a new mixer was put in to place. While this new mixer could handle simple tracks, up to 4 or perhaps 5 ‘voices’ in size, anything above this causes the PSP to buffer over-run, crashing the system. This I suspect is due to the limited amount of memory available, and the requirements needs by PME to generate and mix the required Sine Waves neccesary for complex Binaural Beats.
I intend to overcome this short-fall by creating a pre-buffer section, that will calculate how much pre-buffering is required before playing to ensure that the application does not over-run. I’ll also have to calculate the maximum amount of voices possible on the PSP, in order to prevent this limit from being breached by a malformed beat file.
PME is available as an unfinished product, the most up to date version(if you can call it that) dates from the 2nd of May 2005, and can be found here, on QJ.net.
This project WILL be picked up again in the future, and as part as an on-going plan for a Web Application, will be completed, time allowing.
Thanks for all the support on this project, I only wish I could bring you a finished product sooner.
Rock on!

I hope so much you find some time for it soon …
If you need some help for design/grafics/betaTesting with good earphons .. please let me know. I´d be glad to help.
Hi hackePeter! Sure thing, thanks for the offer! I too hope that I can get around to putting some hours into this project again. I had a lot of fun learning new techniques and theories that allowed me to initially create the PME..I only hope that one day it will be complete, in a stable state.
Thanks for commenting, I’ll keep you posted
I am in the middle of a project very similar to this one and just came across PME on qj yesterday. My inspiration came from a Makezine article (http://makezine.com/10/brainwave/). One of the things that I wanted to add to my project was the flashing lights. Any chance I could get the source code? I’d like to make some changes for my personal use. Thanks!
Hi lopazopy, glad to see more like-minded people are taking on projects like this. Out of interest, are you coding yours for the PSP platform?
PME has not had visual stimulation added yet, and is not ready to be released to the public as the newer version is not wholey stable..I can show you my mixing function if you like, which unfortunately does not use any kind of buffer at the moment, and so is prone to overflow, but the basic mixing of sine waves is there
Very interresting stuff
Hope you can find some extra times to complete this great release !
Cant wait for another release! The easiest way to get past the memory problem is using High Mem Modl watcha think? I would be really lovely if the program could run presets from other apps (preferably sbagen/idoser)including bwgen. Another cool option could be mixing with mp3s onboard the psp – i personally prefer to listen to my presets as they are but i know quite a few ppl that enjoy mixing it with reagge/techno/chillout/jazz(?). Yet again compatybility with other formats is prior to me. But hey, even if you dont update THANKS FOR A SUPERB APP! p.s. Ever tried Amanita Muscaria? Its the source of Soma, the drink of gods, the elixir of immortality…
Great i appreciate your work, i tried sbagen but is necessary to stay near a computer
waiting for improvement
i suggest to add the capability to read sbagen files, or build an interface to create the files
